Boats in Bellagio: questions
Is Bellagio better than Varenna?
They answer different questions. Bellagio is larger, better connected by boat and has more to do on foot; Varenna is smaller, quieter, and is the one with a railway station.
If you will arrive by train from Milan and want somewhere calm, Varenna is the easier life. If you want a village with year-round services, restaurants that stay open and the whole ferry network on your doorstep, Bellagio is the stronger base. Buyers frequently look at both and choose on aspect and light rather than on the villages themselves.
Can you reach Bellagio by train?
Not directly. Bellagio has no station; the usual route is by train to Varenna-Esino-Perledo on the eastern shore and then across by ferry.
Can you moor a boat at Bellagio?
There are moorings in and around the village, but they are scarce and rarely available on the open market.
Private jetties and boathouses attached to waterfront houses are the reliable route, and are one of the main reasons those houses trade at a premium. Berths otherwise tend to move privately when they move at all.
