Why the Riva Still Belongs on This Lake

The boat is not a beautiful object that happens to have ended up here. Its proportions are an answer to a particular kind of water, which is why it looks correct on a deep alpine lake and slightly misjudged everywhere else.

The yard is on the wrong lake, and that is the point

Begin with the fact that mildly undoes the association. The yard is not on Lake Como and never has been. It was founded in 1842 at Sarnico, on Lake Iseo, and the family's own account is that Pietro Riva made his name repairing local boats damaged in a storm and stayed to build them. It has been in that town ever since.

The line runs through four names. Pietro's son Ernesto put internal combustion into hulls that had been rowed and sailed. Serafino turned the yard towards motorboats and, between the wars, towards racing, where the reputation for speed was made. And Serafino's son Carlo, who was born in Sarnico in 1922 and died in 2017, designed and sold the boats people mean when they use the name at all.

The geographical objection dissolves the moment you notice that Iseo and Como are the same problem: deep, narrow, tideless, fresh, walled by mountains, with villages down both shores and a building at the end where the boat sleeps. A hull developed for one is a hull developed for the other. The boat did not come here and adapt; it arrived already shaped by conditions identical to these, which is a different and more interesting claim.

Freeboard is the tell

Look at one side on and measure by eye the distance from the waterline to the top of the topsides. It is much less than you expect. The sheer runs almost straight, the hull sits low, and a passenger aft can put a hand in the water without leaning. On a seagoing boat that dimension is a safety margin and is fought for. Here it has been deleted, because nothing is coming over the side.

The second is the length of the foredeck. A large part of the boat lies forward of the windscreen with nothing under it but a shallow locker. At sea that volume would be a cabin, because a boat that goes anywhere must shelter, sleep and stow. Here nobody sleeps aboard, so the space goes instead to an unbroken curved plane of varnished wood, which turns out to be the most valuable thing aboard.

Everything else follows. The cockpit is open and unprotected, the upholstery pale and the metalwork bright, and none of that would survive a season of spray. Two large petrol engines drive a hull rarely asked to run for long, because the journeys are short and the arrival is most of the purpose. It is a boat with a very high ratio of ceremony to endurance, which is only rational on water that never demands endurance.

On a sea boat, freeboard is a margin of safety. On this water it is only a wall between the passenger and the lake. So it was taken away.

Fresh water permits things salt water forbids

The absence of salt is not a footnote to the specification; it is the permission slip for all of it. Chrome, bright fastenings, unpainted mahogany, white hide, an engine bay finished as though somebody might look into it. Every one is a poor decision at sea and a sound one on a lake. A wooden hull in salt water is a defensive structure. In fresh water it is allowed to be joinery.

The absence of tide does the rest. The mooring geometry is fixed, so a boathouse can be built with its sill at a set height, a cradle can sit at a known level, and the boat can be put away every night by one person. That is why these lakes are full of buildings designed to swallow a boat whole, and why a boat living inside one can carry a finish that would be absurd on a coast.

The conditions impose their own problems, and every owner learns them: ultraviolet on the horizontal surfaces, dew from September, standing water in a cockpit. The answer is a maintenance schedule and it belongs in our owner's guide rather than here. What matters for the design argument is that these are building problems rather than sea problems, solved with a roof and a routine instead of heavier construction. Which is why the boat could be built this lightly at all.

The Aquarama is the one everyone means

It arrived in 1962, and not from nowhere: it grew out of the Tritone, and the prototype was built on a Tritone hull. The name came from Cinerama, the wide-screen cinema format of the period, and refers to one feature: the windscreen wrapping round the cockpit to give the passengers a panorama rather than a view through a frame. A boat named after a cinema screen is a fair account of its purpose.

What makes this the one everyone means is not that it was first, fastest or largest. It is that the proportions close. An open hull of around eight metres, twin engines, the long foredeck, the curved screen, and then the decision that settles the design: a sun deck laid aft over the engines, converting the back third from machinery into furniture. That is the invention. A fast boat that is also somewhere to lie down when it is going nowhere, which is what most boats here are doing most of the time.

It was built, through the Super and then the Special, until 1996: better than three decades for a shape never seriously redrawn. Very little survives that long without restyling, and the reason this did not need it is the argument of the whole piece. It was not styled to a fashion but fitted to conditions that did not change.

What the varnish does under this particular light

A varnished hull is not wood with a colour on it. It is many thin coats built over mahogany and flatted back between them, finishing as a clear layer above the grain rather than a film on it. You look through it. The grain reads at depth, the way the bottom of clear water does, and because the topsides are curved and polished the flank works as a distorted mirror.

That is worth more here than almost anywhere, because of where the light comes from. For much of the day in a steep valley the light arrives across the water rather than down onto it, and the surface throws a second, weaker light back up. A varnished hull under those two sources does what a painted one cannot: it takes its colour from whatever it is beside, green against a wooded slope, slate in the middle of the basin, warm at either end of the day, while the chrome draws a hard bright line where the curve turns over.

Put the same boat under high overhead sun on open salt water and the effect collapses. The finish goes dark and heavy, the horizontal reflections it was built for are absent, and the thing starts to look like drawing-room furniture carried outdoors. Nothing is wrong with the boat. It is lit from the wrong direction, under a sky it was not drawn for.

The same country, the same decades, the same instinct

The boat belongs to a stretch of Italian manufacturing in which the engineering decision and the sculptural decision were taken as one rather than two. The cars of those years, the scooters, the typewriters and the coffee machines share a method, and the boat is unmistakably made by the same culture: Carlo Riva worked with a designer, Giorgio Barilani, from 1956, which is the arrangement the car firms of the period were arriving at as well.

The shared vocabulary is specific enough to list. A single continuous skin pulled over the mechanical parts, so nothing reads as an assembly of components. One long horizontal line held end to end, doing most of the work of proportion. Instruments treated as jewellery and set into a panel. Chrome used as drawing rather than ornament: an edge, a highlight, a division between surfaces. A screen whose curvature governs everything behind it. Each of those describes the cars of the same decades as accurately as it describes the boat.

Underneath sits the assumption they hold in common: these were objects composed to be looked at from outside at least as much as used from within. A boat of this kind is drawn for the person on the quay as well as the one at the wheel. So was the car. That is a design culture rather than a coincidence, and it is why the thing reads so well from a hundred metres, a strange quality in a vehicle, and a useful one here.

Whether the argument survives the modern boats

The family let go a long time ago. Carlo Riva sold the yard in 1969 to an American corporation and stayed on as chairman for a short period; the company changed hands more than once afterwards and has belonged to the Ferretti Group since 2000. Sarnico is still there and still building, and the name now covers a range running a long way beyond an open runabout.

The current runabout is honest about what it is. The hull is composite, drawn by an outside studio, and the mahogany survives as deck, trim and joinery rather than as structure. It is a good boat and an unusually disciplined piece of styling on a heritage. It also does things its ancestors cannot: it is competent in an afternoon chop, it needs no shed, and it has no varnish schedule to fall behind on.

But the argument does not transfer, and it is worth saying so rather than pretending otherwise. The wooden boat was the shape those conditions produced. The modern one is a well-made quotation of that shape in a material chosen for other reasons: it resembles the answer without being it. That is a description rather than a complaint, and it is exactly why people go on buying and restoring boats built in the nineteen-sixties, and why on a flat morning the old one is still the object everybody turns to look at.
