Behind every house that runs smoothly here is a small number of people who are competent, local and consistent, and finding them is the single hardest part of owning at a distance. The trades on this lake are seasonal, family-held and largely invisible to anybody arriving from outside.

The writing here is about that working population, about how the year divides between winter trades and season trades, what the professions are, and how an absent owner is supposed to tell the difference between someone good and someone available.
