Food

The table, the hours it occupies, and why lunch is the meal that matters here.

2 pieces

Eating well here is less about finding the right restaurant than about understanding when the day is for eating, and how much of the social and family life of the place happens inside a long lunch. Visitors book dinner and treat the middle of the day as an interruption, which is precisely backwards.

These pieces are about that: the shape of the meal, entertaining in houses and on boats, seasonality, and arriving by water. What they do not contain is a list of restaurants. We do not publish one, for reasons the guides set out plainly: a recommendation is only worth anything when it is made for a specific person on a specific evening.
